Rieflin nación en 1960 en Seattle y empezó su carrera musical a finales de los setenta en bandas locales como The Telepahts, Tupperwares o The Blackouts. En su trayectoria, Rieflin se destacó por ser uno de los músicos más importantes en la escena del rock alternativo y de géneros como el metal.
Luego formó parte de Ministry durante parte de los ochenta y los noventa. Su siguiente destino fue R.E.M. desde 2003 hasta 2011 y después se enroló en King Crimson primero como baterista y luego como tecladista.
